Why Build Demand?

Since its founding, Generation Citizen has established an effective civics education program proven to get youth more involved in our democracy. Ultimately, as our mission dictates, we want to ensure every student in America receives an action civics education.

We recognize that to achieve this goal, we will have to scale in ways above and beyond bringing our program to new communities.

To that end, GC has begun to engage in advocacy and policy work, building the demand for action civics, so that educators, philanthropists, and policymakers alike recognize the importance of educating young people to be active citizens. We wish to use the results and promise of our direct service program to make the case that action civics should become a staple of the educational curriculum in this country, everywhere.

End Goals To ensure that every student has a highquality action civics education, we suggest that it must become a core element of the public school system. As such, the longterm realization of our goal will consist of the following principles:

1. Action civics is a core part of mandatory student assessments.
2. More funding (philanthropic and public) must be allocated to action civics.

We will use the following segmented process to build demand for action civics:

DELIVER AND BUILD PROFILE OF CORE PROGRAM
BUILD AND DISSEMINATE EVIDENCE BASE FOR EFFICACY FOR INTERVENTION
ENGAGE WITH THOUGHT LEADERS TO BUIILD BUZZ ABOUT INTERVENTION
PARTNER WITH ORGANIZATIONS TO DELIVER PROGRAM (OR ELEMENTS OF PROGRAM)
SET STANDARDS AND GUIDELINES FOR PRACTICE THROUGHOUT THE FIELD
GET FUNDING ALLOCATED FOR PROGRAM
PUSH DIRECT POLICY CHANGE TO STATE, THEN FEDERAL, WHICH MANDATES INTERVENTION
