This week, Generation Citizen kicked off our #EquityInCivics event series with our first national conversation, “#WeAreGenC: Advancing Equity in Civics”, co-hosted with our colleagues at the Children’s Defense Fund. We were thrilled to welcome Rev. Dr. Starsky Wilson of the Children’s Defense Fund, Atlanta-based youth activist Royce Carter Mann, and Boston University professor Dr. Hardin Coleman as guest speakers to deliver their thoughts on what equitable civics should look like, why it is vital to our democracy, and how we can get there.

GC CEO Elizabeth Clay Roy delivered opening remarks on how crucial it is to stand up for teachers, quality civics education, and honest history in our classrooms in this moment:

GC Program Director Megan Brandon delivered remarks on the current state of social studies education in Texas and its ripple effects among community members and nationally:

Guest speakers Rev. Dr. Starsky Wilson and Royce Carter Mann spoke on courageous advocacy for civics education and how to build excitement and investment in equity-centered democratic classrooms in our schools:

Finally, Dr. Hardin Coleman delivered remarks on the current state of social studies education in Massachusetts, and how that can affect us all:
