INTRODUCING THE NY STATE SEAL OF CIVIC READINESS TOOLKIT: EMPOWERING CIVIC READINESS IN NEW YORK STATE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NEW YORK – OCTOBER 25TH – Generation Citizen (GC) is pleased to announce the launch of the NY State Seal of Civic Readiness Toolkit. This toolkit was developed to serve as an entry point for teachers, administration, and staff interested in exploring the NY Seal of Civic Readiness, a formal recognition of civic knowledge proficiency for students in New York State.

With advisement from Greg Fredricks of the Putnam/Northern Westchester Board of Cooperative Educational Services, David Edelman of Union Square Academy for Health Sciences, and Aruna Arjunan of the New Visions for Public Schools network, Generation Citizen developed this toolkit in response to frequently asked questions from district administrators and teachers around how to incorporate the Seal in a manageable and practical way.

The NYS Seal of Civic Readiness Toolkit focuses on the Civic Participation component of the Seal, which awards students points for project-based civic learning, service projects, and other forms of democratic participation.

Key features of the NY Seal of Civic Readiness Toolkit include:

  • Quick summaries of major project components from the Seal
  • Detailed, ready-to-use roadmaps to structure learning
  • Easy-to-follow project examples
  • Effective project templates
  • and more!

Along with GC’s toolkit, handbooks from the New York State Education Department (NYSED) and the New York City Department of Education (NYCDOE) provide guidance on how Seal implementation can look in different contexts.

We believe an informed and engaged citizenry is essential for a strong democracy, and utilizing this toolkit effectively promotes active participation and civic proficiency within the New York community.
